Hamm and Clov

With due acknowledgement to the original Beckett, and apologies to those better writers who have taken his absurdist nihilism as a suitable vehicle to pastiche when commenting on the futility of the Climate wars…

Vladimir and Estragon are the usual protagonists chosen for the role from Godot, but that seems an unduly optimistic vehicle given the present state of play….
HAMM –A large man slouched in a large cushioned armchair in the center of a  room, he appears to be immobile and blind. The armchair is set on caster wheels.
CLOV –A tall thin active figure, stiff and unemotional, apparently. They occupy a small bare room with two high windows in the back wall
HAMM:
What’s the weather like?
CLOV:
Warming.
HAMM:
Look at the earth.
CLOV:
I’ve looked.
HAMM:
With the ladder?
CLOV:
No need of the ladder.
HAMM:
Look at it with the ladder.
CLOV:
I’ll go and get the  ladder. (gets small ladder to climb up and look out both windows)
HAMM:
What’s happening?
CLOV:
Something is taking its course.
(Pause.)
HAMM:
What’s the weather like?
CLOV:
Warming.
HAMM:
Look at the earth.
CLOV:
I’ve looked.
HAMM:
With the glass
CLOV:
No need of the .
HAMM:
Look at it with the glass.
CLOV:
I’ll go and get the glass.
HAMM:
What’s happening?
CLOV:
Something is taking its course.
(Pause.)
HAMM:
What?
CLOV:
It is getting hotter.
HAMM:
Why,
CLOV (uses the ladder and telescope to look out both high windows)
It’s us.
HAMM:
WE are causing the warming?
interesting.
CLOV:
It could be bad.
HAMM:
You’d say so!
CLOV:
We should stop.
HAMM:
We cannot stop.
CLOV:
We need to do something to avoid it getting worse.
(Pause.)
HAMM:
Am I right in the center?
CLOV:
I’ll measure it.
HAMM:
More or less! More or less!
CLOV (moving chair slightly):
There!
HAMM:
I’m more or less in the center?
CLOV:
I’d say so.
HAMM:
You’d say so! Put me right in the center!
CLOV:
I’ll go and get the tape.
HAMM:
Roughly! Roughly!
(Clov moves chair slightly.)
Bang in the center!
CLOV:
There!
(Pause.)
HAMM:
I feel a little too far to the left.
(Clov moves chair slightly.)
Now I feel a little too far to the right.
(Clov moves chair slightly.)
I feel a little too far forward.
(Clov moves chair slightly.)
Now I feel a little too far back.
(Clov moves chair slightly.)
Don’t stay there.
(i.e. behind the chair)
you give me the shivers.
(Clov returns to his place beside the chair.)
HAMM:
What’s the weather like now?
CLOV:
The same, warming
HAMM:
The same? Are you sure?
CLOV:
I’ve looked.
HAMM:
With the glass?
CLOV:
No need of the glass.
HAMM:
Look at it with the glass.
CLOV:
I’ll go and get the glass.
HAMM:
What’s happening?
CLOV:
Still warming
(Pause.)
maybe a little slower.
HAMM:
Good.
CLOV:
No, it is still bad.
HAMM:
What!
CLOV
We need to stop, or it will get worse.
HAMM:
All that movement was not enough?
CLOV:
I’d say no
HAMM:
You’d say no!
CLOV:
Yes
HAMM:
We need to do more you say?
CLOV:
Yes, what are you going to do?
HAMM:
Take away your ladder and glass.

The Director shall not approve new climate science-related initiatives to be carried out through the Office of Science without making a determination that such work is unique and not duplicative of work by other Federal agencies. Not later than 3 months after receiving the assessment required under subsection (c), 23 the Director shall cease those climate science-related initiatives identified in the assessment as overlapping or duplicative, unless the Director justifies that such work is critical to achieving American energy security.

There is another bit of audio-visual nonsense in the pipeline, many parts have been assembled, but not mixed, remixed and edited. That’s the fun, and therefore rather long-winded and slow part of creating these chunks of structured light and sound! At the moment the next piece will have the opposite of the last, simple (possibly monochrome) shapes and graphics with the complexity and chaos in the sound.
But a short holiday will probably further delay more content here until early June.
There is still an intention to do some ‘How To’ type instructional videos on the methods of video making. However the continued inability to get a freeware screen recorder to work probably indicates I am not competent to offer advice or tutorials!
Update: – The AbsractMinima video has been remixed to compensate for the tendency of Youtube to process and compress an uploaded video so that it is darker, and the sound more muffled than the original. A Brighter, sound and picture, version was made to try and correct for that.

UPDATE:-There has been a suggestion that this may be a little obscure? (willfully so ?! -grin)
here are a couple of links that might help!

Perhaps it is a little OT to used the extreme example of existential angst, the Western version of the Buhdist insight that suffering is inherent and inevitable part of sentience, to express the depressing prospect of government control of scientific research.
Endgame makes Satre’s Huis Clos seem upbeat!
But the creeping ‘Lysenkosist’ tendency in the American Republican political sphere was, at least briefly, very depressing. Especially when combined with a spat within the scientifically involved over whether there was ‘seepage’ of contrarian memes into the research agenda…
